Phlox is the flower of the month for May 2025.
The photo shows this flower as it grew at our urban farm in Pennsylvania.
About Phlox
It’s an evergreen plant that blooms in early spring.
It comes in many colors: lilac as shown in this photo, also shades of blue, pink, and purple. And white.
A Phlox Story
When I was a young girl my family drove home from church each Sunday on the back country roads in our community.
One road wound down a hill, into a gathering of trees, and across a stream.
The road then came out of the woods and into a small valley that housed a farm.
From there our car would climb the road up a steep hill that went behind farm house.
That farm house was graced by two enormously tall pine trees and a pond in front of it (Twin Pines Farm).
On the hillside to the left of the road, on a property belonging to another family, there was a large display of Phlox flowers every spring.
The woman who owned that hill meticulously cared for the expanse of flowers, diligently pulling the bits of grass that are prone to grow up between the flowers.
The result was as if someone spread ten quilts across a hillside. It was quite large and a brilliant display of color for the eyes.
Phlox often grow on hillsides. Our farm sits on flat land without hills, but we still hope to plant Phlox for you to enjoy.
Phlox is not hard to grow. It does spread. The flowers send the message that warm days are ahead. The evergreen plant creates attractive ground cover the rest of the year.
